THE OUTDOOR ART show season is winding to a close, and with it goes your last chance to peruse oodles of art in the open air. So be sure and head this weekend to the 1996 Stockley Gardens Fall Arts Festival, showcasing about 135 artists in picturesque Stockley Gardens Park in Norfolk's Ghent neighborhood.

Proceeds benefit Hope House Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides support services for people with developmental disabilities.

It's free and open to the public, with plenty of parking in the surrounding neighborhood. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. p.m. Sunday. 625-6161.

SATURDAY

THEY TWIST, they turn, they dance. Pilobolus brings dance to a new level with their inventive movement, stunning physical feats and visual surprises.

It's the first offering of a typically eclectic season from the Tidewater Performing Arts Society. Plan ahead for ``dancer-physicist'' Michael Moschen (Jan. 11), Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble (Feb. 21) and DIVA (May 3).

Pilobolus is at 8 p.m. at the Harrison Opera House in Norfolk. Tickets: $18-$24, available at Ticketmaster outlets. 627-2314.

IF THE PARTY going down at Norfolk's Boathouse Saturday doesn't get your butt moving, nothing will. Check it out: De La Soul and Fishbone on one bill. De La Soul opened the doors for a host of trip-hoppers, among them PM Dawn and A Tribe Called Quest. ``Stakes Is High'' is the Long Island rappers' latest. Fishbone has tossed everything - jazz and ska, reggae and rock - into their stew for a good decade now. The Goodie Mob and Joi open. It starts at 8 p.m. Tix: $13.50, plus service charge; order at 671-8100.
