Viola M. Comey, 91, a longtime resident of Newport News, died Oct. 17, 1996, in Martha Jefferson Hospital.
Mrs. Comey was born April 2, 1905, in Westfield, Mass. As the wife of an Army officer during World War II and the Korean War, she was inspired by passages from Ruth 1:16, 17: ``For whither thou goest, I will go,'' and ``Where thou diest will I die, and there will I be buried.''
She was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Lyman E. Comey; a daughter, Sandra Diane Comey Bayley; and a brother, Howard P. Mayer. She is survived by her son, L. Richard Comey and his wife, Sue, of Earlysville; five grandchildren, William L. Comey of Alexandria, David L. Comey of Chesapeake, John A. Comey of Harrisonburg, Jennifer Bayley of Hampton and Diane Bayley of Pittsfield, Mass; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Peggy Doucette of Windsor, Conn.; and a beloved sister-in-law, Ethel R. Mayer, of Springfield, Mass.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News. Hill and Wood Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
