For Dr. Mickey L. Burnim and for Elizabeth City State University, today marks the beginning of a new era.
At 10 a.m. Burnim will be sworn in as the university's new chancellor in a ceremony full of symbolism and emotion.
The investiture will take place outdoors in the Williams Hall Quadrangle unless inclement weather necessitates a move indoors to the Vaughan Center.
Immediately after the ceremony, a reception for Burnim will be held in the Williams Hall gymnasium. This evening at 8 p.m., a concluding Chancellor's Ball will be held in ECSU's K.E. White Graduate Center.
Burnim, at 47, will be the third chancellor and eighth chief executive to be entrusted with the destiny of Elizabeth City State University. He was appointed interim chancellor by the University of North Carolina board of governors a little over a year ago.
A historically black institution of higher learning, ECSU started out more than a century ago as a teacher's college and has become a fully accredited university in the 16-campus University of North Carolina system. by CNB
