A story in Thursday's MetroNews section erroneously said that a
new academic building at Virginia Wesleyan College would cost $2.5
million. That is the amount of money raised for the building so far.
The cost of the building has not been determined.
CLARIFICATION
A chart on the MetroNews front Wednesday compared the number of
registered voters in Hampton Roads for the 1992 and 1996 national
elections. Some of the numbers weren't clear to readers. Here's an
explanation in one case:
In 1992, there were 169,556 voters on the rolls in Virginia
Beach. In 1996, there were 172,750. But the chart also showed that
this year, the voter registrar has recorded 31,000 new voters
through a new motor-voter law that allows citizens to register at
Department of Motor vehicles offices or through the mail.
The 31,000 number appeared at odds with the 3,194-voter
difference between the 1992 and 1996 elections. That's because each
year, cities' registration rolls change. In Virginia Beach, large
numbers of inactive voters or people who move out of the city are
dropped from the records.
Between 1992 and 1996, the state Board of Elections and the
city's voter registrar's office purged Virginia Beach's lists five
times. So although the total number of voters on the registration
lists only increased by 3,194, about 31,000 on the rolls were newly
registered through the motor-voter law. by CNB
