Pier fishing improved all along the Dare Coast on Thursday.
Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught some nice-size sea mullet, small speckled trout, bluefish and spot mainly during the afternoon.
On Avalon Pier, big sea mullet, small bluefish and a few trout were taken.
Nag's Head Pier reported tailor bluefish landed early in the morning. A few spot, pigfish, gray trout and good-size sea mullet were caught later in the day.
Fishing was slow on Jennette's Pier during the morning. Sea mullet were taken throughout the afternoon.
On Outer Banks Pier, a mixture of black drum, gray and speckled trout, sea mullet and sand perch were taken off and on during the day.
On Hatteras Island, fishing was fairly slow on Rodanthe Pier. Anglers landed a few bluefish, sea mullet and flounder.
Fishermen on Avon Pier caught only a few spot, sea mullet and gray trout.
Small speckled trout, toadfish, pompano and spot were landed from Frisco Pier during the morning. A good run of sea mullet developed during the afternoon.
Scattered sea mullet and spot, small bluefish and several flounder were landed along the beach from Corolla to Oregon Inlet.
Speckled trout, small bottom fish and a few puppy drum were taken by surf fishermen from Rodanthe to Buxton.
Good catches of drum were reported from Cape Point on Wednesday night. Small bottom fish, a few trout and some false albacore were landed Thursday. Additionally, a 13-pound striped bass was beached.
Some nice sea mullet, a few bluefish and a handful of keeper flounder were landed by surfcasters from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet.
Yellowfin tuna fishing was fair off Oregon Inlet. Charters averaged five to 10 tuna of mixed size per boat. Action was scattered from the point to east of the inlet.
Dolphin fishing was excellent off Hatteras with just about everyone getting their limit. Good numbers of king mackerel were taken on live bait, and a few tuna and wahoo were landed.
Sea mullet fishing should improve as water temperatures fall in the northern states, moving more fish into this area.
The water temperature was 66 degrees Thursday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 68 degrees at the Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
