James A. Howard Sr., 78, a native of Norfolk, died Oct. 18, 1996, in DePaul Medical Center.
He attended Maury High School and graduated from Oak Ridge Military Academy in Oak Ridge, N.C. Attending the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, on a basketball scholarship, he played both varsity basketball and baseball. He was a co-captain of the 1941 basketball team.
He served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theatre, during World War II. He was a football referee in the Old Collegiate Southern Conference. He graduated from Duke University Law School in 1950 and practiced law in Norfolk since that time up to the present. He served as president of the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association and as president of the Virginia State Bar. He was elected as a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
He served for a number of years as the representative for the Federal Fourth Circuit on the American Bar Association Nationwide Committee for the screening of nominees for federal judgeships. He was a Master of Ruth Masonic Lodge. He for many years arranged pairings of college football teams for play in the Oyster Bowl. He was a member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and the Princess Anne Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen Logan Howard of Norfolk; two daughters, Martha H. Stathis of Williamsburg and Susan H. Slaughter of Preston, Md.; his son, James A. Howard II of Virginia Beach; a brother, Harry E. Howard, Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; and four grandsons.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Monday at Forest Lawn Cemetery by Rev. Richard Bridgeford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital or the Norfolk Urban Outreach Ministries. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is in charge.
