Evelyn Skelton Tonkin, 57, of the 800 block of Colony Manor Road, died Oct. 19, 1996, due to complications from cancer.
Evelyn was born in Ashland, Wis., on March 21, 1939. She retired from Chesapeake Public Schools. Evelyn cherished the friends, memories and the pleasure she gained during the years of round and square dancing. She truly enjoyed the time spent with her family. Her grandson, Zachary, was a special joy. Evelyn was a thoughtful friend to everyone and she will be missed by all who knew her. She attended New Temple Grove Ministries Church.
Survivors include husband, Robert V. Tonkin; a daughter, Kimberly Tonkin Oliver; and son-in-law, Don Oliver; a grandson, Zachary Lee Oliver, all of Chesapeake; two sisters, June Dickerson of Chesapeake and Lois Miller of Ashland, Wis.; two brothers, Stanley Skelton of Anaheim, Calif., and Keith Skelton of Fort Myers, Fla; and other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at New Temple Grove Ministries Church, 3972 Military Highway, Chesapeake, by John McDonald, pastor, at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk. The family will receive friends in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday.
