Sarah L. VerWiebe was appointed tax associate with the firm of E. Wayne Bostain, MBA, CPA, in Virginia Beach. Prior to this, she was an accountant with Johnson Controls World Services in Cape Canaveral, Fla.
ARCHITECTURE
John C. Bucelato was named vice president and director of market development at The TAF Group in Virginia Beach. He recently retired from the Navy as a captain.
DISTRIBUTION
Robert W. Jones Jr. was elected president of D.D. Jones Transfer & Warehouse Co. in Chesapeake. He has held positions in operations and marketing with the company for the past 12 years.
EDUCATION
Howard M. Pardue was named senior director of personnel for Norfolk Public Schools. Prior to this, he was vice president, human resources at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky.
Mark A. Byrd was appointed director of institutional research and planning at Virginia Wesleyan College. Prior to this, he was employed at the University of Michigan as a senior research associate, graduate research assistant, independent consultant and graduate teaching/research assistant while working on his doctorate in higher education research and evaluation. Byrd replaces Larry H. Kelley who is now director of institutional research and planning at the University of West Alabama.
HEALTH CARE
Sentara Health System appointed Michael M. Dudley to senior vice president for managed care. In this position, he will be responsible for the leadership and management of Sentara's health plans and managed care products. Dudley most recently served as president of Kaiser Permanente Insurance Co. in Hartford, Conn. He replaces Jack McNamara who retired in January.
Dr. Charles D. Ray is the newest member of the practice of Dr. Peter M. Klara, a neurosurgery medical facility specializing in spine care. Ray is the director of research and development for the Spinal Research & Education Foundation in Virginia Beach and is also a member of the Sentara medical staff.
HOSPITALITY
Mark F. Mohrbach was named general manager of Smithfield Station, a hotel, restaurant and marina in Isle of Wight County. He was formerly with Cracker Barrel and the Americana Hotel Chain.
LAW
James L. Chapman IV, a partner with Crenshaw, Ware & Martin in Norfolk, was elected chairman of the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute. The Institute, which has over 700 members, was established in 1968 to provide a forum for the discussion of admiralty and maritime law among attorneys in the southeastern ports of the United States.
S. Lawrence Dumville, a Virginia Beach attorney, was named to Who's Who in American Law 1996/1997. Dumville was recognized for his contributions to the betterment of contemporary society. His practice emphasizes litigation for both the defense and injured persons.
ORGANIZATIONS
The Tidewater Association of Service Contractors elected Scott Price of Analysis & Technology Inc. president for the 1996-97 year. Caroline Hitchens was named vice president. She works for Information Technology Solutions Inc.
Albert Sidney Roberts Jr., a resident of Norfolk and a professor at Old Dominion University, was named a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The honor is conferred upon a member with at least 10 years active engineering practice who has made significant contributions to the field.
REAL ESTATE
Jonathan S. Guion was elected vice president, office and industrial division at S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co. He was previously an industrial specialist. Also, Nathan E. Jaffe was elected vice president, sales and development. He was an associate broker.
SHIPBUILDING
Paul J. Minehart was named director, marketing communications at Newport News Shipbuilding. He will be responsible for all corporate and product advertising, trade shows and exhibits, promotional materials and special events. He joins the company after working with the electronic systems group of Westinghouse in Baltimore, which was recently acquired by Northrop Grumman.
