SOUTHAMPTON SOLIDLY IN FIRST PLACE

Rico Ivey finished what Torrey Goodwyn started - a powerful running attack that gave Southampton sole possession of first place in the Bay Rivers District last Friday night.

Each player ran for 100-plus yards and scored two touchdowns in the Indians' 28-0 victory over previously unbeaten Bruton (6-1, 3-1).

Goodwyn gained 100 yards in the first half and scored Southampton's first two touchdowns on a pair of 1-yard runs. Ivey completed the attack, scoring both of his touchdowns in the fourth quarter. And the Indian (7-0, 4-0) defense did its job, holding explosive Bruton running back Jermaine Burke to 45 yards.

Southampton's two region foes, Smithfield and Franklin, had mixed results last week and face each other Friday for the second time this year. The Packers defeated Grafton and Franklin lost to Tabb last week.

Suffolk's two Southeastern schools, Nansemond River and Lakeland, were on the wrong sides of blowouts and could be again this week.

Here's a closer look at last week's action and a look ahead:

SOUTHAMPTON ACADEMY at HALIFAX ACADEMY

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Records: Southampton Academy (7-1, 7-1 Colonial Carolina Conference); Halifax Academy (4-4, 4-4).

Outlook: A win here gives the Raiders the No. 1 seed in the playoffs and a bye. Southampton Academy tuned up for its season finale with a shutout of Parrott 18-0. Against Halifax, the Raiders will see a 4-2 defensive front set that has given them trouble throughout the year. Coach Dale Marks figures the Raiders will have to establish a passing attack and be able to run to outside. Halifax's playoff berth was jeopardized with its 51-18 loss to Lawrence last week. Another loss here and a Lawrence victory over Hobgood will keep Halifax out of post-season play.

YORK at SOUTHAMPTON

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Records: York (5-2, 3-1 Bay Rivers); Southampton (7-0, 4-0).

Outlook: Sinque Holmes had 119 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries as York defeated Poquoson 35-7 last week. The Falcons, hoping to catch Southampton off-guard, could move into a tie for first place with a road victory here. Southampton won its 15th straight Bay Rivers game and 21st consecutive regular-season contest with Friday's victory at Bruton. The Indians' run defense will have to produce again as York gained 407 yards on the ground against Poquoson.

NANSEMOND RIVER at WESTERN BRANCH

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Records: Nansemond River (1-6, 0-4 Southeastern); Western Branch (3-4, 2-2).

Outlook: The Warriors hit rock bottom last week as Great Bridge snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 43-7 victory over Nansemond River. The Warriors gained 227 rushing yards, nearly one-third of that coming on Vernon Woodson's 72-yard scoring run. This week's contest will be no easier as the Bruins are coming off an 24-21 upset to Oscar Smith. The Bruins out-gained Oscar Smith by 56 yards and had seven more first downs but committed six turnovers.

INDIAN RIVER at LAKELAND

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Records: Indian River (6-0, 4-0 Southeastern); Lakeland (5-2, 2-2).

Outlook: Both teams were routed last week. This game could easily continue the trend. The Cavaliers gained only 96 yards and fell behind 48-0 to top-ranked Deep Creek. For three straight games, Lakeland's leading rusher Travis Rawls has been held under 100 yards. This trend, too, could continue. The Braves hope to roll through this one on all-cylinders as the showdown against top-ranked Deep Creek follows. Indian River crushed Hickory 59-0 last week.

ISLE of WIGHT at NANSEMOND-SUFFOLK

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Records: Isle of Wight (5-3); Nansemond-Suffolk (4-3).

Outlook: Isle of Wight's smooth season has hit a couple of potholes following consecutive losses. Brunswick defeated the Chargers 32-16 last week. Yet, the Chargers are constant threats with the ground attack of brothers Van and Griffin Williams. N-SA looks to win the ``battle of the running backs.'' The Saints gained 323 yards on the ground in a 36-6 victory over Hampton Roads Academy.

SMITHFIELD at FRANKLIN

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Records: Smithfield (2-5, 1-3); Franklin (3-4, 2-2).

Outlook: The Packers broke a three-game skid with Friday's 12-9 victory over winless Grafton. Smithfield's only other victory was a 16-12 win over Franklin in its third game. Packer coach Joe Jones' former team lost its second straight with a 25-6 defeat to Tabb last week. Willie Jones' fumble recovery in the end zone was Franklin's only score. Better play from the offensive line and the defense, which seemingly spent much of the game on the field, are keys if Franklin is to get back on track.

WINDSOR at SURRY

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Records: Windsor (0-8, 0-2 Tri-Rivers); Surry (7-0, 1-0).

Outlook: A matchup of ``best'' against ``worst'' in the Tri-Rivers will add to the misery of Windsor's long season. The Dukes trailed 26-0 and eventually lost 40-13 to Sussex Central on Saturday. Both of Windsor's touchdowns came on scoring plays exceeding 30 yards. Surry stayed undefeated with a 42-12 victory over Atlantic Shores on Friday. by CNB
