Hattie Sue Bynum Johnson, 59, of the 300 block of Roosevelt St., died Oct. 21, 1996, in Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin.
A native of Southampton County, she was the daughter of Mabel Reid Hunter and wife of Roosevelt Johnson, both of whom survive. She was a Licensed Practicing Nurse at Southampton Memorial Hospital for 39 years and a member of St. Luke AMEZ Church in Franklin and its Deaconess Board. She was superintendent of Sunday School and was active in the church senior choir and Missionary Society. She was a member of the Martin Luther King Choir, the city of Franklin Electoral Board and the NAACP.
Other survivors include her daughter, Beverly Belinda Ruffin of Richmond; a son, Clarence (Bones) Ruffin of Franklin; a sister, Barbara L. Bynum of Goldsboro, N.C.; brothers, Willie O. Bynum of Newport News, Earl M. Bynum Sr., Willie (Roy) Hunter Jr., both of Franklin; and one grandchild.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in St. Luke AME Zion Church by Dr. M.A. Pierce. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery. William M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home is in charge. Remains will be placed in the church for viewing at 1 p.m. The family will assemble in the home of Mrs. Mabel R. Hunter, 834 Coolspring St., at 12:50 p.m.
