I read with sadness and disbelief the article ``Advocates: Changes to rules for day care would do harm'' (Oct. 10). All changes listed in this article would not only harm the quality of day care but make conditions dangerous and steer parents away from day care.
Educational requirements for day-care staff, such as high-school diplomas and college education/degree for the director, are necessary. How do children compete in kindergarten without quality preschool programs?
Most important, increasing the staff-student ratio should not be tolerated. More accidents can occur and less time will be spent on learning.
Children are our best investment, and if changing standards makes day care more dangerous and less educational, then what have we accomplished?
