Looking for a howling good time Halloween night? Well, boys and ghouls, many of your favorite Outer Banks haunts are planning parties.
Here's my annual report, Harper's Halloween Happenings:
Frisco's in Kitty Hawk is having a costume contest offering cash and prizes. The bewitching night's activities also include a ``spooky noise and scary screams'' contest.
If the mood strikes you, the karaoke machine will be loaded with Halloween hits. My suggestions for spirited singers? ``Witchy Woman,'' ``Spooky,'' ``Thriller,'' ``Ghostbusters'' and ``Monster Mash'' are guaranteed to make a pumpkin shiver.
Kelly's Restaurant and The Neurocktics go together like ghosts and goblins. The Outer Banks' premier party band will rock the house for the 12th consecutive year.
The Nags Head nightspot will have a costume contest with $500 in cash and prizes.
``It's always a big night,'' says owner Mike Kelly. ``It's a night people take on a second identity.''
Goombay's in Kill Devil Hills will have a costume contest and live music for its party. A pumpkin carving contest starts at noon, with the judging at 8 p.m.
Mulligan's in Nags Head has Along For The Ride to provide music for its Halloween happening. And here's a real surprise: There will be a costume contest.
At Maione's in Nags Head, Theatre of Dare actor Sidney Bounds will read Edgar Allan Poe stories. Owner Joe Maione is also negotiating with a psychic and palm reader.
``I've contacted a couple of people from Virginia Beach,'' Maione says. ``We'd like to have a seance after dinner.''
That sure would be less fattening. And Joe, save your money on long-distance calls. If the psychic is any good, she'll hear you.
Port O'Call in Kill Devil Hills will shake, rattle and roll with the Hampton Roads band, The Boneshakers. Wear a costume, there will be a contest. The Jolly Roger Restaurant is really in the Halloween spirit. Heavy decorations adorn the Kill Devil Hills eatery that has Blackbeard the Pirate as its spokesman in TV commercials.
``It's really a blast,'' says co-owner Jane Janicki. ``The employees dress up from breakfast on.''
In addition to a costume contest, soulful singer Jamie Jamison provides a spirited soundtrack for the night's activities. MEMO: John Harper covers Outer Banks entertainment for The Carolina
