Before you head to the polls to vote in the Nov. 5 elections, check your voter registration card. Your precinct might have changed.
The city now has 45 precincts instead of 36.
The voter registrar's office, with the approval of City Council and the U.S. Justice Department, has expanded Chesapeake's precincts to make life simpler for voters. Citizens were notified of the change earlier this month.
A 1991 redistricting by the state General Assembly had changed legislative district lines. In some precincts, voters were casting ballots on several different races, causing confusion for citizens and poll workers.
``We got a lot of complaints from the voters that they were confused,'' said Ruth Mangone.
Also, fast-growing Chesapeake had some precincts that had grown large and unwieldy, such as in Great Bridge and Greenbrier, Mangone said. It was time for a change.
