Owen Pickett has represented Virginia's 2nd congressional district for nine years. A member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1972-1986, Pickett is a Richmond native who enjoyed a successful career as a lawyer and certified public accountant before entering politics.
Pickett has gained the respect of fellow legislators through careful attention to detail and a willingness to avoid the limelight.
Married with three grown children, Pickett served on a range of Democratic party committees and is now the 8th ranking member of the National Security Committee. He also serves on congressional caucuses affecting the Army, the arts, aviation and space, and boating matters.
He grew up in rural Hanover County, the youngest of three children. His father died when he was 7 years old. His mother went to work in a local manufacturing plant to pay the family bills. She died in 1973. IN HIS OWN WORDS
``The person elected to represent an area has a responsibility to represent the collective views of those people. In my case, I did my very best to get around the district and form a judgment about how people feel about the issues. I try to reflect that view when I vote in the House.''
