Anthony Zevgolis got some of his ideas about politics while working in his father's cafeteria in downtown Hopewell, a popular gathering spot for local elected officials.
At the time, Zevgolis' father explained to him that the Republican party represented the rich, the Democrats, the poor. After 11 years in the military, a career as a businessman in Hopewell and six years on City Council there, 59-year-old Zevgolis no longer believes that to be true.
He believes government shouldn't be obligated to take care of people from cradle to grave. The most government should do is to provide tools for people to take care of themselves, he says. He's running against Sisisky for the second time - a first, unsuccessful bid was in 1992 - because he thinks long-time incumbents, particularly Democrats, in Congress have created the problems the country now faces. IN HIS OWN WORDS
``Certainly we're hoping to win a grass-roots campaign, but this may just be a starter for next year.''
