Holland said her conservative leanings developed from a modest and disciplined upbringing in rural Dinwiddie County.
The family members took care of themselves by growing their own food, caring for a sick grandmother and ensuring all the children were educated - despite the prejudices and limitations associated with being black.
Holland said she wants other minorities and women to ``know the joys of being independent,'' and would make welfare her first target in Washington.
