It was only fitting for Norfolk Academy's field hockey team that its veterans would shine on Senior Day.
Co-captain Mary Burroughs scored twice and Jennifer Holbrook and Tricia Voyer each added a goal in the Bulldogs' 4-0 win over Hampton Roads Academy in the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools tournament championship game Saturday. The title was Academy's ninth in 10 years.
Norfolk Academy (16-4-1) dominated the game offensively, tallying 21 shots and 12 penalty corners to just one of each for the Navigators.
Despite the pressure, the Bulldogs didn't get on the board until the 20:13 mark of the second half, when Holbrook blasted a point-blank shot past Navigator goalie Jaclyn Williams off an assist from Mason White.
All four Norfolk Academy goals came off penalty corners.
``You could tell it took a little power out their sails when we scored that first one,'' Bulldogs coach Mary Werkheiser said.
Hampton Roads Academy did appear to deflate after falling behind, allowing Burroughs' first goal at the 16:07 mark off an assist from Voyer.
Voyer got in on the act in the game's waning minutes, scoring with 4:48 remaining, and Burroughs clinched the tournament offensive MVP award with her second goal at the 3:22 mark.
Hampton Roads Academy (9-2-2) had their only scoring chance of the game off a penalty corner with 6:40 to play, but Bulldog goalie Liz Enright kicked the bouncing shot away to end the threat. It was the only save the senior co-captain had to make all game.
``We were mentally ready for this one,'' Burroughs said. ``It was a nice finishing game.''
Burroughs, White, Holbrook and Enright were named to the all-conference first team.
Hampton Roads Academy junior Ashley Meeker was named the tournament's defensive MVP. by CNB
