Alton Wilson Newbern, 78, died at his residence on Oct. 26, 1996.
Born in Currituck County, N.C., he was a farmer and owner/operator of Hilltop Market and a member of Hebron United Methodist Church.
Mr. Newbern was the husband of Margaret Owens Newbern of the residence and son of the late Cleveland and Minnie Walker Newbern. Besides his wife, survivors include a son, Carlton Douglas Newbern of Powells Point; three sisters, Edna Hudgins of Chesapeake, Betty McIntosh of Lakeland, Fla., Ruth Schultz of Sunlake, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the family cemetery at Harbinger, N.C., with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth C. Singley officiating, assisted by the Rev. Linwood Jones. The family will be at the residence. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, is in charge.
