Just two months after prosecutors decided not to pursue two capital murder charges against a New York City man accused of killing two women in January, new charges have been filed.
And the suspect now faces additional drug and weapon charges, police said Sunday.
David H. Hughes, 24, was arrested without incident at 2 p.m. Sunday by narcotics investigators at a hotel in the 700 block of East Ocean View Ave.
The original charges against Hughes were nolle prossed - not pursued - in Norfolk Circuit Court on Aug. 28 because prosecutors could not meet a deadline to assure him a speedy trial.
At the time, Hughes' attorney, Kenneth Melvin, said prosecutors were forced to take that action because crucial DNA test results were not ready.
Police spokesman Larry Hill said Hughes has been reindicted for the murder charges and that when investigators went to pick him up, they found cocaine and a gun in his room.
He was charged with possession of the drug with intent to distribute and possession of a gun while in possession of cocaine. He faces arraignment today on those charges.
Hughes was first arrested Jan. 19 and accused of killing Karan D. Miller, 29, and Angela D. Hawkins, 36.
At that time, police would not discuss the motive except to say that the two women ``had similar occupations.'' Police said the two women were known to be on the street often in areas frequented by prostitutes.
Both women were last seen alive late Jan. 10 or early Jan. 11. Their bodies were found two hours apart in separate areas of the city.
Hawkins' body was found on Marlow Avenue, near Norfolk Naval Air Station. Miller's body was found in the parking lot of Lake Taylor Middle School by a student arriving for classes.
