JUVENILE LEADS POLICE ON 100 MPH MANTEO CHASE

A runaway juvenile driving his parents' car led police on a chase that reached speeds of 100 mph through usually quiet downtown streets.

Four patrol units from the Manteo Police Department and the Dare County Sheriff's Department followed the youth down Sir Walter Raleigh Street at approximately 1:15 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The pursuit continued north on U.S. 64/264 to Airport Road.

The youth then turned onto Sunnyside Road and abandoned the vehicle before fleeing into the woods.

The youth was believed to be at large Tuesday afternoon, a Manteo Police spokesperson said.

No one was hurt in the incident, and no charges have been filed.

The case has been turned over to juvenile authorities for further investigation.
