Cheryl Byrd has kept close watch on the county government even before she decided to run for a commissioners seat, attending more than 35 commission meetings in the last year. Several things became apparent to her in her observations over the months, she said.

``The biggest reason that I'm running is I want everyone to know that everything is being run fairly,'' Byrd said. ``The other issue is planning for the future - we have an awful lot of things we want government to do, but we don't seem to want to pay for it.''

A Dare County property owner for 11 years, Byrd said her first priority if she was elected would be to make the commissioners meetings ``more civil.''

``They're awfully rancorous now,'' Byrd said. ``People are at each other's throats.''

Byrd also wants county job openings to be advertised, to implement long-range planning, provide more year-round jobs and affordable housing. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
