Incumbent Mac Midgett built his first store 15 years ago, and has had to rebuild three times because of flood damage. With his first-hand experience with storms, he believes he has lent a valuable perspective to the county's hurricane policies.
A native of Hatteras Island, Midgett said he realized early in his term that it takes more than one politician's beliefs to run a county government.
``You don't turn the world around by yourself,'' he said. ``I went in thinking I was going to change everything. It works out that you got to work together.''
Midgett said he has done the best job he can representing the people of the county, and he hopes those that agree vote for him.
``What the people have called me and asked me to do, I have tried to help them,'' Midgett said. ``I didn't get into this thing for myself . . . I'm not bragging or anything, but I think I've helped the people of Dare County. I really do.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo
