An electrical malfunction is believed to have sparked a two-alarm fire early Sunday inside Bill's Flea Market, authorities said. The building is home to about 40 sales outlets.
Firefighters were called to the market in the 4800 block of Virginia Beach Blvd. about 6 a.m. When they arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the structure.
Battalion Chief Mike Wade said bargain-hunters were driving up to the large indoor market even as firefighters arrived on the scene.
The building originally housed the FX home electronics store.
Wade said an internal sprinkler system assisted efforts to quell the blaze, which was declared under control about 6:30 a.m.
Wade said there was moderate smoke damage throughout the building and only light fire damage in one portion of the structure.
No one was inside at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported among about 40 firefighters called to the scene.
