Capt. Sidney Aaron Snyder, USA, Ret., 83, of the 6600 block of Catherine St., died Nov. 11, 1996, in his residence.
Capt. Snyder was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk. He was the son of the late Thomas Samuel and Yetta Spiro Snyder. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre, and retired in 1945 as a result of his war injuries serving his country. He was awarded two Bronze Stars with Oak Leaf Clusters and three Purple Hearts with Oak Leaf Clusters. He owned and operated Sidney's, a ladies' clothing business in Norfolk and Virginia Beach from 1936-80. He was a member of Ohef Sholom Temple in Norfolk and graduated from Maury High School, Class of 1932.
Mr. Snyder was a member of Norfolk Masonic Lodge (NU)1; Scottish Rite Bodies; Khedive Temple; 50-year member of The Norfolk Sertoma Club. He was a counselor for SCORE, an affiliate of the Small Business Administration for 20 years, and was a significant blood donor with the American Red Cross. He was also a speaker for civic responsibilities at the citizenship and naturalization ceremonies conducted at the Norfolk Federal Courthouse for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Sherry Emdin Snyder of Norfolk; his children, Linda Snyder Brownstein and her husband Neill, of Palo Alto, Calif., Thomas Emden Snyder and his wife, Lacinda, and Sidney Alan Snyder, all of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Lillian S. Davis and Helen S. Simmons, both of Norfolk; and four grandchildren, Will Gordon, Alexandra L. Snyder, Julia P. Snyder and Katy Ann Snyder; and three step-grandchildren, Adam and Todd Brownstein and Emily Grace Hamilton and numerous nieces and nephews.
A temple service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ohef Sholom Temple by Rabbi Lawrence A. Forman and Cantor Jenifer Bern-Vogel. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Ohef Sholom Temple, Jewish Family Services of Tidewater, or the Shriners' Crippled Children's Hospital.
