ELDERLY WOMAN KILLED IN COLLISION INVOLVING 2 TRUCKS, CAR AT BEACH

An elderly woman was killed Thursday when the pickup in which she was a passenger crashed into a car and overturned, police said.

Ellen J. Burrell, 87, of the 1300 block of Grand Cypress Square died shortly after arrival at Sentara Bayside Hospital.

Police said the truck Burrell was in went through a red light, striking a car and another pickup, at 4:39 p.m. at Haygood and Ferry Plantation roads.

The truck was driven by the victim's sister-in-law, Virginia D. Burrell, 66, of Leland, N.C.

She was taken to the trauma center at Virginia Beach General Hospital. Her condition was not known late Thursday, but her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Police said all the people involved were wearing seat belts and that alcohol was not a factor.

The driver of the car the pickup truck hit, Charles Hartzell, 79, of the 4700 block of Ferry Plantation Circle, was taken to the trauma center at Virginia Beach General Hospital. The driver of the other pickup was not hurt. ILLUSTRATION: GARY C. KNAPP
