I would like to comment on the Another View (Dec. 28, 1996) concerning the risk of working alone in convenience stores.
The suggestion of requiring two workers at night is commendable, but as long as the world is full of jerks who place no value on the lives of defenseless victims, two wouldn't be enough.
The only effective solution would be legislation to require either drive-up windows or locked entryways so the clerk would gather items for night-time sales and conduct transactions through a turnstile-like window from behind bulletproof glass, to be accompanied by a panic button attached to an outdoor alarm with flashing lights to draw attention in the event of trouble.
