JOYCE S. GILDING

Joyce Kaye Smith Gilding, 54, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1997. She was born in Norfolk and lived in Newport News for 16 years.

Joyce devoted her professional life to helping people with mental retardation develop their full potential and achieve the best possible quality of life. Since 1988, she served as the executive director of the Association for Retarded Citizens-Peninsula, which operates the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Regional Center, Hampton. Before that, she worked for state agencies in Massachussetts and Virginia and became the center's associate director in 1981. Joyce touched many lives, personally and professionally, with warmth, commitment, integrity and fairness.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Paul Randall Gilding; their schnauzer, Tippett; her mother, Audrey Elizabeth Quinn Smith of Gloucester; her brother, Peter W. Smith IV and sister-in-law, Betty S. Smith of Chesapeake; her closest cousin, Mary Lee Rowe and Mary's husband, Eric Rosenfeld of Massachusetts; and many family members in Gloucester. She was predeceased by her father, Peter W. Smith III.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday in Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester, by the Rev. John Dennis. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
