I moved to Virginia Beach in April. During my time here, I have been surprised and disappointed in many things the Hampton Roads community has done. Stopping the curbside recycling in Virginia Beach is the first to come to mind.
I quickly learned that the city councils within Hampton Roads do not cooperate with each other. In order for this area to be ``put on the map,'' that should be top priority. As nice as it would be to have a major-league sports team here, it makes me sad to think that this is the reason these cities are finally working together. You'd think that serving the day-to-day needs of the community would be the cause.
And, finally, the way two cities here - Norfolk and Virginia Beach - treat the homeless makes my skin crawl! Homeless people are exactly that - people without homes. The ``not-in-my-back-yard'' attitude needs to stop. Shelters need to be provided. These people are citizens just like you and me. With proper shelters and help, they have a chance to get back on their feet.
