Irma Pinner Sawyer, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997, at a Nags Head nursing facility.
``Mrs. Irma,'' as she was affectionately known, or ``Nanny'' to many, was born in East Lake and was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church and the Roanoke Island Garden Club, Hattie Griffin Circle and the Holland Wescott Sunday School Class. She was the daughter of the late Samuel and Mary Jane Pinner, and the wife of the late Roland Sawyer Sr.
She is survived by two sons, Roland Sawyer Jr. and wife, Kay, and Byron Sawyer and wife, Sandra, all of Manteo, owners of R.D. Sawyer Motor Co.; four grandchildren, Roland ``Dock'' Sawyer III and Marcia Sawyer Danchise, both of Manteo, Dena S. DeLeon of Fuquay Varina and April S. Coneys of Alpharetta, Ga.; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Mount Olivet United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dennis Goodwin. Burial will follow in Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Irma Sawyer, 303 Ananias Dare St., Manteo. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the church or to the Roland and Irma Sawyer Scholarship Fund. Twiford's Colony Chapel is handling arrangements.
