Carrie D. Matthews, 89, of the 100 block of Lake Front Drive, died Jan. 12, 1997, in Guardian Care of Ahoskie, N.C.
Born in Corapeake, N.C., she was the widow of Bythell L. Matthews and the daughter of the late Sallie Crocker Doughtie and Richard Doughtie. She was a retired packer for Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. She was a member of The Salvation Army of Suffolk and was past secretary of the Women's Home League of The Salvation Army.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Parker of Pendleton, N.C., Irene Wiliamson of Suffolk; three sons, Joseph B. Matthews of Suffolk, James A. Matthews of Fredericksburg, Va., Leslie H. Matthews of Suffolk; a sister, Bessie Duffee of Portsmouth; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, A. Fred Matthews, who died in May of 1996.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Hill Funeral Home, Suffolk, by Captain Jeff Miracle. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home and will be at the home of her son, J.B. Matthews, 105 Lake Front Drive, Suffolk, at all other times.
