William Francis Hazelbaker, 69, of the 4000 block of W. Colonial Parkway, died Jan. 12, 1997.
A retired chief petty officer of the Navy with 21 years of service, he was employed at Commander Undersea Surveillance at Dam Neck and Little Creek Amphibious Base. A Boston native and a Catholic, Mr. Hazelbaker was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and Korea, having served in the China, Burma and India Theater during World War II. He dedicated his service to his country for a total of 54 years. He was also a member of The Radioman Association, IUSS Caesar Alumni Association and S.A.C.O. He was the son of the late Bill and Anna Hazelbaker.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley S. Hazelbaker; two daughters, Diane Wilson and her husband, Clarence Wilson, Doreen Hall and her husband, Michael Hall, all of Virginia Beach; two stepdaughters, Sharon Mentus and her husband, John Mentus of Virginia Beach, Dawn Leland of Iowa; two sons, Thomas Hazelbaker and his wife, Susan Hazelbaker of Virginia Beach, Gerald Hazelbaker and his wife, Sharon Hazelbaker of Broadway, Va.; a sister, Marie Gonz of Norfolk; eight grandchildren; and a niece, Eva Kline of Norfolk.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, by Fr. John J. Morris. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997, in Arlington National Cemetery. A Christian Wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. today in the funeral home with the family remaining until 8:30 p.m. to greet friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.
