A.J. ``Johnny'' Hayes, 68, of the 1900 block of Darnell Drive, died Jan. 9, 1997, in a local hospital.
Mr. Hayes, a native of Leesburg, Ga., was a member of C.H. Mason Memorial Church of God in Christ in Norfolk where he served on the male usher board and was a bus driver for the bus ministry. He was a retired auto mechanic and served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Ruth E. Hayes.
Survivors include six daughters, Emma Holley, Nannie Caldwell, Stephanie Blanchard, Lillie Diane Hayes, Mary Hayes and Ruth Hayes, all of Norfolk; seven sons, David Holley, William Hayes, Dennis Hayes, Major Hayes, Najee Rashad, Earlon Hayes and Kenneth Hayes, all of Norfolk; two sisters, Margaret Hayes and Norma Bell, both of Cincinnati; three brothers, Major Hayes, Robert Walker and Samuel Hayes, all of Cincinnati; 54 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two aunts; an uncle; and a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nannie and Edress Hayes.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at C.H. Mason Memorial Church of God in Christ, 744 Goff St., Norfolk, with Elder David B. Williams officiating. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Family and friends will assemble at 1959 Darnell Drive at noon on Thursday for the procession to the church. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Norfolk, is handling the arrangements.
