SALVAGE EFFORTS HONORED: Twenty-five Navy men and women from Naval Beach Group Two have been presented Navy Achievement Medals or Navy Commendation Medals, along with the Navy Unit Commendation, for their efforts to recover the wreckage of TWA Flight 800 off Long Island, N.Y. The awards were presented Monday by Commodore Jerome E. Schill, commander of Naval Beach Group Two and Cmdr. Michael H. Conaway, commanding officer of Amphibious Construction Battalion Two.

SUPPLY SCHOOL OPENS: The Navy today formally opens its new $4.1 million resupply training facility, officially called the Standard Tensioned Replenishment Alongside Method/Underway Replenishment (STREAM/UNREP) School, at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. Personnel will be trained in all aspects of underway replenishment at sea, including maintenance of equipment and forklift truck operation. Operated by the Expeditionary Warfare Training Group, the school will be staffed by a faculty of 10 instructors and one officer and will train about 900 students a year. The school previously was located at Treasure Island, Calif., but was moved as part of that base's closure.

OPEN HOUSE ABOARD SHIPS: Two Navy ships will be open for visiting between 1 and 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The destroyer Thorn will take on tourists at the Norfolk Naval station. Visitors should enter through Gate 2. The dock landing ship Carter Hall will be on hand at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. Visitors should use Gate 1. In addition, the coastal patrol craft Firebolt will be tied up at the Nauticus International Pier Friday through Sunday.

NAVY HONORS KING: Martin Luther King Jr. will be honored today in a ceremony from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the DeVary Auditorium, Bldg. C-9, Norfolk Naval Station. The Rev. Carlton R. Upton Sr., pastor of Tabernacle Christian United Church of Christ in Suffolk, will be the guest speaker.

BLACK HISTORY SPEAKER: Television news anchor Barbara Ciara of WVEC-TV, Channel 13, will be the featured speaker at a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Norfolk Live at the Norfolk Naval Station. Sponsored by the Naval Air Station Black History Committee, tickets are $10 and can be obtained by calling 444-2784 or 444-3983, Ext. 315 or 348.

PARATROOPERS MEET: The 82nd Airborne Division Association will hold its annual installation of officers and awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Officer's Club at Fort Monroe, Hampton. For information call James Baker, 622-3275 (office) or 857-5727 (home).

COMINGS AND GOINGS

More than 100 members of the 1st Fighter Wing's 94th Fighter Squadron returned home to Langley Air Force Base in Hampton this week, following a 90-day deployment to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey. About 70 support personnel arrived Monday and the remainder, including F-15 aircraft, are due today. The deployment marked the first time a 1st Fighter Wing squadron had been used in ``Operation Provide Comfort,'' over the ``no fly'' zone in Iraq.

After taking part in the largest NATO exercise in the Mediterranean Sea during 1996, the special warfare delivery submarine James K. Polk returns to Norfolk Friday to end a six-month deployment. The sub is expected to arrive at noon at Pier 23 of the Norfolk Naval Station. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
