James D. Payne Sr., 35, departed this life on Saturday, Jan. 11, 1997 at Sentara Hampton General Hospital.
A native of Richmond, he was a member of Hood Temple AME Zion Church, Richmond and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. He was employed by United Parcel Service where he worked as a truck driver. Mr. Payne served as assistant coach and later head coach of the Hampton Blue Devil basketball team.
He is survived by his wife, Claudine Parson Payne; two sons, James D. Payne Jr. and Christopher R. Payne, all of Hampton; his father, James D. Payne; a brother, Keith M. Payne; grandmother, Priscilla Hopkins; aunt, Margaret Cosby, all of Richmond; two uncles, Charles Hopkins and Jordan Hopkins of Denver; a niece, Joyce E. Payne; two devoted cousins, Sharon Mills of Greenville, S.C., and Randall Hopkins of Richmond; mother-in-law, Geraldine Parson; father-in-law, Deacon Cloyd Parson; a devoted sister-in-law, Phyllis R. Parson, all of Surry County, Va.; three brothers-in-law, Wayne Parson of Dudley, N.C., Shelton Parson of Newport News, Lloyd Parson of Hampton; a great-uncle; two great-aunts; five godchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Homegoing services will be held noon Thursday at Hood Temple AME Zion Church, 16 West Clay St., Richmond. Interment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today in St. Paul Holiness Church, Dendron, Va. Arrangements by Poole's Funeral Home, Surry.
