MAURY TEACHER ARRESTED ON SEX CHARGES

A Maury High School teacher was arrested Monday on sex-related charges involving a 16-year-old student at the school, police said.

Just after noon, Walter H. Green Jr., 36, was taken to the Police Operations Center, where Detective G.T. Davies of the sexual assault unit charged him with three counts of indecent liberties with a minor. Norfolk police were assisted in the arrest by Chesapeake police.

Police said the charges stemmed from an ongoing relationship with the student, whom Green taught at Maury.

The crimes allegedly occurred between Dec. 1 and Dec. 14. Two of the incidents happened at the school and the other occurred somewhere else, Hill said.

Green, of the 3100 block of Petre Road in Chesapeake, teaches English and is a track coach, Hill said.

Bond was set at $15,000, and Green is scheduled to appear in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court at 10 a.m. today.

School officials said Green would be suspended without pay from his teaching job pending the outcome of the case.

Green is the son of Alveta V. Green, appointed unanimously last week by the City Council to a vacant School Board seat. She is to be sworn in today at 2 p.m. in General District Court.

City Councilman Herbert M. Collins Sr., who nominated Mrs. Green, called the situation ``very unfortunate,'' but said Monday that it would have no bearing on her appointment.

``You can't help what your grown children do; she can't be responsible for him,'' Collins said. He added: ``I don't think we need to make a political football out of that. I think her integrity is impeccable.''

Collins said he had polled other council members and that they stood behind Alveta Green, a retired, award-winning teacher with a 34-year career in Norfolk schools.

Alveta Green could not be reached for comment Monday.
