Two charter boats were destroyed and a third was badly damaged by fire early Monday morning at Pirate's Cove Marina.
Marina officials said the boats, used to carry recreational fishermen to Atlantic waters, were valued at $400,000 each. They were among the scores of big boats kept at the marina on the west foot of the Highway 64 bridge over Roanoke Sound.
Firefighters from the Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched at 12:16 a.m., and battled the blaze for more than four hours. No one was hurt.
The cause of the fire was under investigation Monday evening.
Firefighters used more than 70 gallons of extinguishing foam to put out the blaze. A spokesperson for the Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department said freezing temperatures made it difficult to fight the blaze.
Temperatures were around 20 degrees, and firefighters slipped on the frozen decks.
An open slip next to one of the boats helped firefighters keep the blaze from spreading, the spokesperson said.
The 41-foot Excalibur of Manteo was damaged. Officials said the 46-foot Foxy Lady of Virginia Beach and the 48-foot Sea Jenks of Manteo were destroyed.
The fire also caused some damage at the nearby docks and pilings. ILLUSTRATION: [Color Photo]
