Fred Adam Smaltz Sr., 69, of the fourth block of Chatham Road, died Jan. 21, 1997, in a local hospital.
A native of Martinsburg, W.Va., Mr. Smaltz was a machinist for Shops 31 and 38 at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and a member of Fairview Heights Baptist Church, Portsmouth Moose Lodge No. 898 and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary H. Smaltz; four sons, Fred A. Smaltz Jr. of Bethel Island, Calif., E. Wayne Smaltz of Norfolk and Martin L. Smaltz and J. Keith Smaltz of Chesapeake; two brothers, Clarence R. Smaltz Jr. of Portsmouth and Earle L. Smaltz of Huntsville, Ala.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by Dr. Ted Barton. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.
