Awards were presented to 10 volunteers of the Young Men's Christian Association of South Hampton Roads at the organization's annual dinner meeting Thursday.
S. Frank Blocker Jr. and the late F. Ray Johns were awarded the Order of the Red Triangle, the YMCA's highest honor, given for longtime volunteer service.
Blocker is owner of Eastern Auto Jeep-Eagle in Norfolk. Johns, who died in November, was treasurer of the Birdsong Corp. in Suffolk and YMCA board chairman. Johns' award was presented to his widow, Jean Johns.
One volunteer from each of the YMCA's eight branches received a Service to Youth Award for his or her work with children.
Recipients and the YMCA's they serve are: Karen Fletcher, Mt. Trashmore; Patricia Demasi, downtown Norfolk; Tripp Johnson, Suffolk; June Clifton, Chesapeake; Marlene Randall, Effingham Street; Sandy Karr, Greenbrier North; Walter Potter, Hilltop; and Rick Thompson, Indian River.
Officers of the YMCA's Metropolitan Board of Directors also were named. They are: Thomas C. Hostutler, senior assistant vice president-corporate accounting for Norfolk Southern Corp., chairman; Bruce Bradley, president and publisher of The Virginian-Pilot, vice chairman/chairman-elect; Joe Kennedy, owner of Remedy Intelligence Staffing Services, treasurer; and Sandra Birdsong, community volunteer, secretary.
