5 HOSPITALIZED AFTER 2 VEHICLES COLLIDE ON NEWTOWN ROAD

A two-vehicle collision on Newtown Road late Friday sent five people to area hospitals, police said.

Witnesses told police that a dark blue minivan was driving in the wrong lane on Newtown Road without headlights when it collided head-on with a white sedan between Lake Edward Drive and Virginia Beach Boulevard.

The force of the crash, which occurred about 10 p.m., jammed the van's left wheel through the floorboard. The van's steering wheel pierced the windshield.

Rescue workers using heavy-duty equipment took about 40 minutes to free the trapped occupants of both cars. The names and conditions of the occupants were not available. Police said none of the injuries appeared life-threatening.

The accident closed the southbound lanes of Newtown Road for several hours.
