Perhaps we should rename the new hockey team the Hampton Roads Whiners instead of the Hampton Roads Rhinos. I'm really sick of people complaining about that whole dollar they will have to pay a year to support an NHL team.
I watched a man on the local news last week state that the money should be used in support of education rather than hockey. But he then defeated his whole argument by saying he would not mind the money being used in support of a pro basketball team.
The same argument keeps popping up - that there is not enough interest for hockey in Hampton Roads. Yet who would have thought the Admirals would become so popular? Hampton Roads took a chance, on a minor-league team, no less, and it was a success.
The Rhinos, as an NHL franchise, would bring in not only local hockey fans but fans from all over Virginia and neighboring states. We are not guaranteed to ever get a bid for an NBA or NFL team. So, for the best of Hampton Roads, let's support the Rhinos and not the whiners.
