Kimberly Judson of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, Marcus Artis of Nansemond River High School, and Jessica Zunigaof Lakeland High School have good reason to be proud.
They were selected as recipients the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen award at their schools and were presented certificates and Good Citizens pins by the Constantia Chapter of the DAR.
Initially, Kimberly, Marcus and Jessica were among several seniors nominated by the faculty for the awards. Perhaps the greatest compliment, however, was paid to them by their peers in the senior classes, who were asked to make the final selection.
Qualifications for DAR Good Citizens include dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. Open to senior class students enrolled in accredited public or private schools, the DAR Good Citizens Program and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.
Kimberly Judson's leadership is evident in her involvement, not only in school activities, but in community service. She has excelled in academics and athletics and has participated in the Virginia Girls' State Leadership Program. She is director of the Suffolk Anchor Club, and is a member of the International Club and Values Committee, which includes student and faculty discussions of student values.
``As a volunteer for the American Heart Association, Louise Obici Memorial Hospital and many community projects such as a fund-raiser walk for Alzheimer's disease, I have a good understanding of the community's need of support and commitment from the general public,'' Kimberly said.
Besides being listed in ``Who' Who of America's High School Students,'' Kimberly was awarded an Excellent Certificate and ribbon in a local oral French competition and is a photographer and reporter for the yearbook and newspaper staff at the Academy.
Over the past 12 years, Kimberly has participated in dance, piano and horseback riding. She won the Piano Guild Founder's Medal in national competition as well as certificates for Piano Levels of Progress and the National Piano Guild Auditions.
Kimberly's skill as a rider of the western saddle and English hunt saddle has earned two Grand Champion ribbons and several blue, first-place ribbons.

``I would enjoy a career that involves interacting with the American public as well as foreign countries, such as a negotiator in international business,'' she said.
Kimberly is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Preston L. Judson of Cherry Grove Road North.
Marcus Artis, who is maintaining a 4.166 grade-point average, plans to pursue a career in the Genetic Engineering/Physics fields.
``Through CHROME, I was able to apply to the 1996 Medical College of Virginia Governor's School,'' he said. ``In the six-week program, I experienced hematology, oncology, surgery, labor and delivery, genetics, radiology, pharmacy, biochemistry, pediatric ER and chemotheraphy.''
Marcus is president of CHROME and the Senior Beta Club at his school, and the Usher Board at the East End Baptist Church. He also is drum major and president of the Nansemond River Marching/Symphonic bands, and section leader and first chair flute and piccolo.
Marcus has received recognition by Gov. George Allen for community and state leadership, by the Suffolk Pilot Club as a Young Achiever, and the Princeton Book Award.
He has attended American Legion Boys State and received the Outstanding CHROME Student Award. He is a Nansemond River High School Talent Show winner, is a National Macy Scholar and is a candidate for the Macy Minorities in Medicine Program.
Marcus is the son of Carolyn Artis of Beech Street.
Last year, Jessica Zuniga was selected to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Washington, D.C.
``My goal is to become a doctor of obstetrics and gynecology,'' Jessica said. ``The field is diverse. . . there is surgery, patient-to-doctor interaction, and the patients can range from 8 to 80.''
A member of the Suffolk Interact Club, Jessica is president of the Spanish Club and a member of the Beta Club, Ecology Club, Student Council Association and the Debate Team.
