Charles Willman ``Brownie'' Brown died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1997. He was 91.

An executive vice president (retired) and long-term consultant for the National Association of Marine Services Inc. (NAMS), Brownie was a native of Norfolk and the widower of Lillian Willse Brown. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II.

Brownie's lifelong accomplishments are highlighted in the 12th edition of World Who's Who in Commerce and Industry and include acting as engineering assistant for New York City Railroad, 1926-1930; vice president of Brown & Book Inc., 1930-1941; president of Chautauqua County Council Boy Scouts Administration, 1941-1942; assistant division director of the War Shipping Administration, Washington, 1942-1947; executive secretary of Independent Wire Rope Manufacturers Association, 1959; elected vice president, International Ship Suppliers Association of Copenhagen, Denmark; organizer and executive secretary, succeeding to executive vice president of NAMS, 1948-1983. Brownie was a 33rd-degree Mason and an Episcopalian. As a member of several organizations, including the American Society of Association Executives, the National Maritime Public Relations Council, the Steamship Historical Society of American Clubs, the American Merchant Marine Conference Committee, Brownie dedicated heartfelt devotion and many years of service.

Brownie leaves behind two loving daughters, Diette Brown Curry of Norfolk and Mary Jane Laneve of Derwood, Md.; three granddaughters, Kimberli C. Furman of Norfolk, Sandy Anderson of Morristown, N.J. and Jennifer Crisalli of Silver Spring, Md.; grandson, Kirk Laneve of Mount Airy, Md.; and two great-grandchildren, Drew and Erika Furman. He was predeceased by his parents, Alexander Wilhelm and Anne Plumb Brown. Brownie's effervescence and unconditional love will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

Brownie's family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. Immediately following a memorial service to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the same location, the burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
