CAREER TRACK

COMMUNICATIONS

Chris Kouba has been named managing editor of The Virginian-Pilot's Pilot Online operation, effective Feb. 17. Kouba will lead an effort to expand the newspaper on-line subsidiary's content and viewership. He most recently has been director of product strategy at Norfolk-based InfiNet, a national Internet services provider that is partly owned by The Virginian-Pilot's parent company, Landmark Communications Inc. Kouba previously held various editing positions at The Pilot, including editor of Hampton Roads Business Weekly.

Robert Sage, previously general manager for the Hampton Roads market at 360 Communications, was appointed regional director of marketing. He started his career at 360 Communications in 1985 as dealer sales manager for Hampton Roads.

ARCHITECTURE

Samuel S. Snapp Jr. was named a field administrator with HBA Architecture, Engineering & Interior Design in Virginia Beach. Prior to this, he was a project manager with an architectural firm in Virginia Beach.

Also, Melinda P. Avila-Torio was named an interior designer with HBA. She previously managed the Avis Rent A Car project in Virginia Beach.

BANKING

Deidre M. Borum, Lorelle L. Fritsch and Jennifer F. Habit were promoted to assistant vice presidents at the Bank of Hampton Roads. Borum will continue to manage the Greenbrier office, Fritsch will still serve as an accounting officer at Greenbrier, and Habit will handle the bank's personnel at Greenbrier.

Virginia Beach Federal Savings Bank appointed Donald S. Buckless to assistant vice president and branch manager of their newest office in Williamsburg. He was most recently branch manager of First Union Bank, Waller Mill Road office in Williamsburg.

CHAMBERS

The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, Portsmouth division, board of directors approved R. Steve Herbert, chief of plans and policy for the City of Portsmouth, as an ex-officio board member.

DISTRIBUTION

James B. Thomas Jr. was promoted from senior executive vice president to director of U.S. investments for Wolseley. He will also serve on the board of directors for Wolseley. Wolseley acquired Ferguson in 1981.

MUSEUMS

Three function-based departments - museum operations, museum education and outreach education and special services - have replaced separate administrations for Jamestown Settlement, the Yorktown Victory Center and Education. The new division will be headed by Samuel J. Wegner, deputy executive director for museum operations and education. Wegner will also direct the museum operations department. Ruth A. Haas, previously acting director of Jamestown Settlement, will serve as museum education services director. Joseph A. Gutierrez, previously director of education, will be outreach education and special services director. Thomas E. Davidson and Pamela J. Malonson will serve as managers in the museum operations department. Douglas R. Shipman, Eric A. Speth and Anne L. Price will serve as managers in the museum education department. Also, James S. Holloway will serve as outreach education services manager.

LAW Neil S. Lowenstein and Valerie J. Brodsky were named partners with Vandeventer, Black, Meredith & Martin. Lowenstein joined the firm in 1989 and practices in construction law, government contracts, environmental law and general litigation. Brodsky also joined the firm in 1989 and practices in immigration law, corporate, commercial and health care law.

ORGANIZATIONS

The Association of Professional Communication Consultants elected Sherry B. Scott as its 1997-99 president. Scott is a partner with The Oak Group in Williamsburg, a company which helps small businesses develop their organization and employees as well as providing full-service training products and services.

Lisa Schauer Mullins, advertising account supervisor at Barker Campbell & Farley in Virginia Beach, was named president-elect of the Virginia Society for Healthcare Marketing and Public Relations. Mullins currently develops advertising and marketing strategy for Sentara Health System, Norfolk and Inova Health System in Fairfax.

SHIPBUILDING

Newport News Shipbuilding has added four members to its board of directors. The new board members are: Retired Navy Adm. Leon A. Edney, former vice chief of naval operations and Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic; William R. Harvey, president of Hampton University; Gerald L. Baliles, a lawyer and former governor, and Stephen R.
