Mary M. Mercer, 80, formerly of Suffolk, died Feb. 7, 1997, in her home.
A native of Jones County, N.C., she was the widow of Jake Mercer and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, and the Sunshine Sunday School Class.
Survivors include five daughters, Anne Hutchinson of Virginia Beach, Gracie Munthe of Suffolk, Sue Bungarner of Pasadena, Md., Trudy Cooper of Sandy Springs, Okla., and Darlene Gardner of Suffolk; three sisters, Lila Gibbons of Jacksonville, Fla., Katherine Cox of Portsmouth and Elizabeth Shaheen of Washington, N.C.; brother, Lovett Phillips of Jacksonville; 27 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by sons, Lewis Mercer and John Mercer.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Calvary Baptist Church by the Revs. Ernest G. Roebuck and Dallas W. Bungarner. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk. The family will receive friends in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday. The family will be at the home of Darlene Gardner, 341 Westwood Drive, Suffolk, at other times. Memorial donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 4832 Haygood Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23455, or to the American Cancer Society.
