Cheyenne back in yard after shakedown cruise

The nuclear-powered attack submarine Cheyenne has returned to Newport News Shipbuilding for repairs and adjustments after its shakedown cruise. The Navy contract is worth $16 million. The Cheyenne is the last of the Los Angeles-class attack subs. The Peninsula shipyard, which built 29 of the 62 subs in the class, delivered the Cheyenne in August. The sub arrived in the yard Feb. 3 and the work is expected to be completed by end of the year. Newport News Shipbuilding, which employs nearly 18,000 people, has a $3.5 billion backlog. The Navy has awarded several ship repair and overhaul contracts to Hampton Roads shipyards recently. Norshipco won a $2.3 million contract for overhauls of the Typhoon and Sirocco, two high-speed patrol craft based at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. Marine Hydraulics International Inc. won a $1.8 million overhaul of the fast combat support ship Supply. The guided-missile frigate R.G. Bradley will be repaired by Dreadnought Marine Inc. for $825,039. And Alexander, Starr, and Kersey Inc. got an $814,100 contract for work on the guided-missile destroyer Mitscher. (Staff) Suit is being prepared against Visa, MasterCard

The Justice Department is preparing an antitrust lawsuit against Visa U.S.A. and MasterCard International for prohibiting member banks from issuing rival credit cards, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday. The case, following complaints by American Express Co., could have serious consequences for the U.S. credit card industry. New York-based American Express has contended that Visa and MasterCard unfairly limit competition and says it has been lobbying banks since May to issue its cards in addition to Visa and MasterCard.
