It was an All-Tidewater dream come true.
Former Virginian-Pilot Players of the Year - three of 'em spanning the last four girls basketball seasons - sharing the court in Friday's Old Dominion-James Madison CAA women's basketball matchup.
Misty Colebank, a two-time Player of the Year out of Salem, her old favorite target in the paint and 1992-93 Player of the Year Kelly Bradley, and 1993-94 Player of the Year Angela Carter of Oscar Smith were there.
Colebank was first off the bench for the Dukes, logged 24 minutes, was 2-for-7 from the floor with two rebounds and had a team-high three assists. Bradley saw eight minutes of action for the No. 2 ranked Monarchs and Carter, a walk-on, got in for a minute as ODU stomped its league foe 77-49.
Butterflies were rampant as Colebank stepped on the court before 4,994 fans and Ticha Penicheiro got in her face.
``I was being guarded by the best point guard in the nation,'' Colebank said. ``And it felt good playing in front of my home crowd. I was thinking, `What plays am I going to call? Am I going to turn the ball over? Who's watching?''
James Madison coach Sheila Moorman was.
``I see a lot of similarities in the two (Colebank and Penicheiro) as far as size and physical ability,'' Moorman said. ``I have aspirations for Misty to be a big guard and do a lot of things like Ticha in the next few years.''
MONARCHS TIDBITS: Baseball America recently ranked the Old Dominion baseball team 45th nationally for its ``Programs in the 90s decade.'' The Monarchs finished 36th in the final NCAA RPI power ratings and the CAA ranked as the sixth strongest league. Junior third baseman/pitcher Ron Walker is rated 40th among college prospects. . . . ODU golf opens its season Feb. 14 in Jamaica, hosting the first ODU/Jamaica Invitational in Montego Bay. Sophomore Troy Thorne led ODU this fall with a 74.1 stroke average. He was 12th in the Kiawah Intercollegiate, tied for fourth in the ODU-Seascape and placed 11th in the Virginia Intercollegiate.
NSU NEWS: Michelle Sessoms, a Deep Creek graduate, was named the CIAA women's basketball player of the week. In three contests last week, the 6-1 senior center collected 62 points, 30 rebounds, 15 steals and seven assists.
Her top performance came against Livingstone when she poured in 26 points, grabbed nine rebounds and made nine steals. . . . Charlette Fayton (Kempsville) earned CIAA Rookie of the Week honors for her 40 points, 18 rebounds, eight assists and six steals.. . . The Norfolk State men's track team captured its third straight CIAA title. Spartans newcomer Allen Mortimer was named the tournament Most Valuable Field Athlete with a 51-foot 9 1/4-inch first-place showing in the triple jump. Norfolk State also took firsts in the 800-meter run, the 55-meter dash, the mile and the 4X400 meter relay.
MARLINS REPORT: Jason Nickerson was named to the ODAC honor roll for the week ending Feb. 2. Nickerson had 49 points, 17 rebounds and seven steals in two Virginia Wesleyan victories. He is currently third in league scoring (16.1 ppg), second in rebounding (7.1 rpg) and first in field goal percentage (63%). is first in assists (6.1) and steals (3.8). LeeAnna Lillefloren (Green Run) is second in scoring (19.6 ppg) and shooting percentage (54.1). Nancy Mattox is sixth in free throw percentage (76.4) and 3-point percentage (32.9).
ALUMNI UPDATE: Tom Dettloff (Kempsville) led a 12-2 Roanoke run as he scored six of his career high eight points in a 92-79 Maroons victory over Guilford. . . . The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's 190-pounder Mark Archer (Virginia Beach) pinned his opponent at the 3:35 mark in the second period of an AIC dual match. . . . Burt Burroughs (Kellam) had 14 points as Mary Washington downed York 52-29 for its 10th win. . . . The Mary Washington indoor track team opened its season with senior Myra Simpson (Kellam) taking first in the 55-meter dash (7.3 seconds) and the triple jump (35'7'') and a second in the 55-meter hurdles (8.8 seconds) and the long jump (16'3''). . . . Megan Reese (Kempsville) was first in the 1,000 freestyle and the 200 breaststroke for the Mary Washington swim team. . . . William and Mary junior Kevin Schell (Salem) was one of two Tribe gymnasts to earn individual honors in the home season opener with a first in the floor exercise (9.35). Schell also turned in a strong performance on the vault, hitting a 9.1, good for second overall. . . . Jennifer Cook (Portsmouth) qualified for the ECAC competition for Virginia Tech with a 8.27 in the 60-meter hurdles. . . .
