Charles Keating Rice, 86, of the 7000 block of Granby St. died Feb. 10, 1997, in a Norfolk hospital.
Mr. Rice was the assistant U.S. attorney general. He was a native of Watertown, N.Y., and a graduate of Cornell University Class of 1932 and its law school in 1934. Following law school, Mr. Rice joined the firm of White and Case in New York City, where he practiced until his appointment to the Justice Department in 1952. Three years later, Mr. Rice was appointed the assistant attorney general of the U.S. and served until 1960. He served during the Eisenhower administration, heading up the Tax Division of the Justice Department, under Attornies General Herbert Brownell and William P. Rogers. Mr. Rice, then, practiced law in Buffalo and Watertown, N.Y. from 1960 to 1979. He was a Roman Catholic, a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the New York, American and Federal Bar Associations.
Survivors include a son, Marcus C. Rice, M.D., and his wife, Mary, of Norfolk; two brothers, Robert C. Rice of Rochester, N.Y., James B. Rice of Skaneateles, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, Edward, Elizabeth and Patrick Rice, all of Norfolk.
A chapel service will be conducted at 6 p.m. today at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, by the Rev. Patrick Doody and the Rev. Charles Joy. Memorial contributions may be made to the DePaul Medical Center Gerontology Unit.
