3 CITIES EXTEND DEADLINES FOR DECALS UNTIL NEXT TUESDAY

In the annual rite of last-minute city auto-decal buying, some local residents will get a short reprieve.

The deadline for stickers in all cities is technically Saturday. But, because of the weekend, Norfolk, Suffolk and Virginia Beach have extended their deadlines. Stickers there will be due Tuesday, the day after the Presidents Day holiday.

The answer in Chesapeake and Portsmouth has been to offer Saturday hours for those waiting until the last minute.

If car owners in Virginia Beach want to save themselves a trip - and they're feeling lucky - they can mail in their applications today, said John Atkinson, Virginia Beach city treasurer. Atkinson said officials should be able to process those applications and return them to residents by the Tuesday deadline.

In some cities, procrastinators already are paying another kind of penalty.

The wait in Virginia Beach was an hour and a half Wednesday, with more than 50 people in line during the lunch-time rush.

All offices will be closed Monday for Presidents Day.
