Richard Whitehead Sr., of the 200 block of Choate St., died Feb. 16, 1997, in Maryview Hospital.
He was a retired forklift operator at Hoechst-Celanese Co. with 29 years service and a native of Southampton County. He was a member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Portsmouth, and the men's chorus.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie Whitehead; two daughters, Ella W. Brooks of Chesapeake and Velma W. Bolden of Potsmouth; six sons, Sidney D. Whitehead, Kamau Chenelo (a.k.a. Wayne Whitehead), both of Portsmouth, Richard Whitehead Jr. of Hampton, James E. Whitehead of Chesapeake, H. Andre Whitehead of Lynchburg, Va., and Timothy L. Whitehead of Jackson, Miss.; sister, Elnora Ricks of Windsor; two brothers, Joe Louis Whitehead of Waverly, Va., and Sidney Whitehead of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; a host of grandchildren; and a host of other relatives, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Curtis E. Edmonds Sr. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at noon today. The body will be taken to the church at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
