A firefighter was injured Tuesday morning when a piece of equipment in the roof of a home on fire fell on him, fire officials said.
The firefighter, who was wearing a helmet, was helping fight a blaze at a home in the 500 block of Sharp St. in Eastern Park when the object fell from the roof and hit his head.
Fire officials were not clear on what the equipment was used for, but described it as being similar to a receptacle used for a ceiling vent.
The firefighter, who was not identified, was treated and released from Virginia Beach General Hospital.
A man living in the rented, single-family house was also slightly injured. He was treated at the scene for minor burns.
A fire official said the blaze, which moderately damaged the house and destroyed part of the roof, was caused by an electrical malfunction.
No damage estimate was available, but an official said the man had no renter's insurance. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
